Raggamuffin atau yang lebih dikenal Ragga berkembang pada tahun 1980-an bersamaan dengan meningkatnya kepopuleran musik dansa elektronik secara global. Salah satu alasan musik ragga berkembang dengan cepat adalah produksinya yang secara umum lebih mudah dan lebih murah dibandingkan reggae yang diiringi oleh alat musik yang sudah umum. Penggunaan elemen-elemen ritmis digital makin membuat musik ini hidup. Produser dengan mudah dapat menggunakan sumber-sumber suara yang baru, dan tidak hanya terus-menerus mendaur ulang ritme yang sudah diciptakan sebelumnya dari era ska dan rock steady.<\/p>\n

Ragga pertama kali berkembang di Jamaika, dan kemudian meluas ke Eropa, Amerika Utara, dan Afrika, hingga akhirnya menyebar ke Jepang, India, dan negara-negra lain. Pada tahun 1990-an, fusi dari ragga dan musik breakcore membentuk genre baru yang disebut raggacore.<\/p>\n

Ragga adalah subgenre dari musik dancehall atau reggae yang terutama hanya memakai musik elektronik sebagai pengiring. Sampling juga memainkan peran penting sebagai ritme yang dipakai dalam musik raggamuffin. Kecuali vokal, ragga sepenuhnya mengandalkan ritme digital.<\/p>\n

Singel ragga yang pertama adalah “Under Me Sleng Teng” dari Wayne Smith yang diproduksi oleh King Jammy pada 1985 dengan memakai synthesizer Casio MT-40. Lagu “Under Me Sleng Teng” mengejutkan penggemar dancehall yang tidak menyangka akan mendengar musik reggae yang sepenuhnya hanya diiringi oleh musik elektronik. Setelah kepopuleran “Sleng Teng”, produser-produser lain segera mengikuti kesuksesan Jammy dengan merilis versi mereka dari riddim yang sama dibantu oleh lusinan vokalis lain. Artis-artis yang memainkan musik ragga di antaranya: Ini Kamoze, Mad Cobra, Beenie Man, Dennis Brown, Shaggy, dan Pato Banton.<\/p>\n

Ragga sekarang terutama dipakai sebagai sinonim untuk dancehall reggae atau mengacu kepada dancehall yang menampilkan deejay yang lebih tepat kalau dikatakan sedang chatting diiringi riddim dan bukan sedang menyanyi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
