Upaya keluarga mendiang penyanyi Bob Marley untuk mendapatkan hak cipta beberapa album ekamannya yang terkenal ditolak oleh seorang hakim New York.<\/p>\n

Hakim Denise Cote memutuskan Universal Music Group, UMG, memiliki hak cipta lima album yang direkam antara tahun 1973 dan 1977 untuk Island Records.<\/p>\n

Janda Bob Marley dan anak-anaknya menuntut ganti rugi bernilai miliaran dolar dari UMG karena perusahaan itu dituduh berusaha “mengekploitasi” rekaman penyanyi berambut gimbal itu.<\/p>\n

Bob Marley meninggal tahun 1981 di usia 36 tahun karena penyakit kanker.<\/p>\n

Album-album yang dipersengketakan -Catch a Fire, Burnin’, Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration dan Exodus- direkam oleh Marley bersama bandnya The Wailers.<\/p>\n

Di dalam album-album tersebut terdapat sejumlah lagu terkenalnya seperti I Shot the Sherrif, One Love dan No Woman, No Cry.<\/p>\n

Keluarga Marley sebelumnya menuduh UMG dengan sengaja menahan royalti untuk perusahaan mereka Fifty-Six Hope Road.<\/p>\n

Mereka juga mengatakan UMG tidak berkonsultasi lebih dulu mengenai sejumlah keputusan pemberian ijin menggunakan lagu-lagu Marley, antara lain penggunaan musik Bob Marley sebagai nada dering telepon.<\/p>\n

Akan tetapi, pada hari Jumat (10\/09) Hakim Cote memutuskan bahwa rekaman-rekaman Marley itu merupakan “karya yang dibuat karena pesanan” seperti yang diatur dalam Undang-Undang Hak Cipta Amerika Serikat.<\/p>\n

Oleh karena itu, hakim berpendapat UMG merupakan pemilik rekaman tersebut karena merupakan induk perusahaan Island Records.<\/p>\n

Robert Nesta Marley lahir di Jamaika tahun 1945 dan meninggal di Amerika Serikat tahun 1981.<\/p>\n

Album kompilasi lagu-lagunya, Legend, adalah album reggae paling laku sepanjang masa.<\/p>\n
